What is so unfortunate is that we have been saying the same thing, now, for decades and it still hasn't happened. We have been talking about parental leave and support for mothers and we haven't been able to convert it into legislation. Now women get to do it all, we get to work outside the home, bring home the bacon, have kids and take care of them and a home. We still do not have equal pay and childcare is a tremendous cost for families with young children. We have more women in positions of power in WA but we still have not gotten legislation that supports women, moms (healthcare, contraception is on the line, I mean, really??)

I would like to see legislation that all women can support, since we have the majority power of the vote and education, at this point. We need to crystalize our power and get it in writing, legislation, what women need, healthcare, child/parental care/leave, choice! How can I help???? Thank you.

I agree with Linda, it was stunning to find out how far behind we really are! This was a great, eyeopening post Valerie and Riane.

It was really stunning to find out how far behind the US is compared to other industrialized nations in terms of supports for families. The important work of raising the next generation is vital to all of us so why wouldn't we be willing to invest to make it more likely that parents get what they need to do the best job they can?

Thanks for reprinting this blog. And I loved your conclusion, Valerie, to "mom up" and help one another and take care of ourselves. That should be a rallying cry for all moms.

Paid leave is available for those who plan ahead and work for the right employers. Short term disability replaces a portion of income during maternity leave, and provides extra coverage in case of complications before delivery. Employers must first offer the benefit. Women would pay the premium themselves. This should be ubiquitous given the importance - but it's not.
